Árvakr, “the early riser”, is one of the two horses that pull the sun across the sky in Norse mythology. ARVAK takes its name from him.
The horse that pulls the sun
The Edda tells how the gods set the sun on a chariot driven by the goddess Sól. It is drawn by Árvakr and Alsviðr, “the very swift”. So that the blaze would not burn them, the gods hid cooling iron beneath their shoulders. Every day the two pull the sun across the sky, chased by the wolf Sköll, and every morning the light returns.
Runes on his ear
In the lay of the valkyrie Sigrdrífa, runes are said to be carved on Árvakr’s ear. That is why our mark combines both: the sun disc and the rune Ansuz, the A of ARVAK.
What the name stands for
Árvakr is no hero with a grand entrance. He is up early, carries a heavy load and is there every single day. That is how we see men’s jewellery: not for special occasions, but a ring, a bracelet or a pendant that comes along every day.
